Kirk Hipple becomes the new sports athletic director for Lee’s Summit West
By: Byron
LEE’S SUMMIT- When Kirk Hipple got to Lee’s Summit West in 2004, to help coach the girl's basketball team, little did he know that 18 years later this school would still be a big part of his life.
Hipple started his transition into Athletic Director in 2009 at Summit Lakes Middle School. He would then switch districts in 2019 to Grandview middle school and high school. The following year he would move to the Raymore-Peculiar School District, and lead the athletic department there. Lee’s Summit School District always had a big place in Hipple’s life, so when the position of Sports Athletic Director opened up at Lee’s Summit West he jumped at the opportunity.
“The level of support is like no other place.” Hipple said, “And, that goes from parents, but it goes to the kids, it goes to our custodial crew.” Hipple said.
The transition for Hipple has been relatively easy, having good relationships with many of the teachers here since the opening of LSW in 2004. His experience at the position has also made the transition for him and the school relatively smooth. Hipple now set his eyes on setting an example of what the West culture will look like.
“You set the standard right off the bat when somebody gets off the bus, or whenever they enter the school. But there's nothing that is more important than a school culture.” Hipple said “I'd like to instill that self of pride within whatever we have here and have kids be able to support kids.” Hipple said.
That’s why the students love Hipple so much. He didn’t take the position of athletic director for his own personal goals, but for the same goals the students, parents, and teachers have. One of the teachers that hold Hipple in high regard is Michael Schieber. Schieber has known Hipple since the opening of LSW, and they worked together really closely with Schieber running the boy's basketball program, and Hipple running the girl's basketball program. Schieber believes his experience as a teacher, coach, and administrator will help tremendously as the new athletic director.
“He's somebody that understands the ebbs and flows and the ups and downs of seasons and understands how to be supportive of the players.” Schieber said “And so I think, you know, that his experience as an administrator, and his experience as a coach, is a good marriage for any AD.” Schieber said.
Schieber doesn’t only speak highly of Hipple’s experiences but of his character, and how these traits will help being the new AD.
“He's got a big heart and is always there for kids. And I think to the best of his ability is around and is supportive of everybody. Schieber said, “He's very detail oriented, I think the biggest thing that I can say about Mr. Hipple is he's present.” Schieber said.
Hipple has already impacted the school, with many people talking about his impact in just the first 2 months. His leadership will be very valuable for the years to come.
